Your larva is a White Lined Sphinx (Hyles lineata) and the plant sounds
like Oenethera hookeri (one of lineata's favorite hosts).  The larvae are
very variable in color (from black to greeen and everything in between).
This is probably the most common Sphingid in the Southwestern USA.  Thanks
to El Nino, we are seeing large numbers of them this year.
