What do you mean by large flies?

I was out camping in the woods in Vermont a month ago, and with lanterns
burning we were inundated with very large horse flies.  None of the Vermont
natives accompanying me had seen them this big before.  It probably has
nothing to do with it, but it is rather interesting.
