The hedge apple is also known as the Osage orange and bois d'arc
(because the Native Americans preferred the wood over all others for
making bows) and it's Latin name is Maclura pomifera.
 It is not true that it chases away bugs. I have heard it said it would
repel roaches, but it does not.
