Moths coming to light at night

Regarding the suggestion that moths might be attracted to the sound made by the
trap lamps, remember that moths have been attracted to different kinds of lights
long before electric lights were invented. My grandfather remarked on the huge
numbers of moths that used to be attracted to street gas lamps, which produce a
very different sound; in fact some of his friends used to tip the lamplighter
(who also had to turn the lamps off in the morning) for collecting any
interesting-looking specimens that were found. Also poets have philosophized
about the fatal attraction of moths to the candle flame for generations.
