More personal observations:

In southern CA I have found the larvae on Chinese Elm many times in
suburban areas.  In some cases they were really common and the larvae were
turning these common shade trees into "partial shade trees".  In the
canyons and foothills the larvae can be found commonly on willow.  I have
not seen them on any other tree in this area.  I also remember collecting
larvae from weeping willow in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts many
years ago.
