If you can get hold of it in a secondhand book shop you might try the
'A field guide in colour to Beetles' by Octopus (now out of print). It
covers all of Europe and shows a huge range of species. It doesn't
show everything (far from it) but it will say where a figured species
is one of a group of closely related species.
