On May 26, a fairly windy day, the following 31 species were
sighted by April Day and I in Garden Canyon in Ft Huachuca, Arizona:
Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor), Two-tailed Swallowtail
(Papilio multicaudatus), Checkered White (Pontia protodice), Southern
Dogface (Colias cesonia), Orange Sulphur (Colias eurytheme) including
a white "alba" female, Mexican Yellow (Eurema mexicanum), Sleepy
Orange (Eurema nicippe), Dainty Sulphur (Nathalis iole), Juniper
"siva" Hairstreak (Callophrys gryneus siva), Gray Hairstreak (Strymon
melinus), Marine Blue (Leptotes marina), Reakirt's Blue (Hemiargus
isola), Acmon Blue (Plebjus acmon), Zela Metalmark (Emesis zela),
Varigated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia), Theona Checkerspot
(Thessalia theona), Bordered Patch (Chlosyne lacinia), Mylitta
Crescent (Phyciodes mylitta), Painted Lady (Venessa cardui),
Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis), California Sister (Adelphia
bredowii), Nabokov's "Henshaw's" Satyr (Cyllopsis pyracmon henshawi),
Silver-spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus), Desert Cloudywing
(Achalarus casica), Northern Cloudywing (Thorybes pylades), Caicus
Skipper (Cogia caicus), ? Duskywing (Erynnis sp?), Common
Checkered-Skipper (Pyrgus communis), Orange Skipperling (Copaeodes
aurantiacus), Deva Skipper (Atrytonopsis deva), Python Skipper
     (Atrytonopsis python).
Although I've never watched butterflies before in the spring in
Garden Canyon, this spring it appears that the relatively cold
temperatures are causing many species to emerge on the late end of
     their normal dates.
