	 RFD for unmoderated group: uk.rec.lepidoptera

 Summary:
uk.rec.lepidoptera	butterfly and moth related topics and events

 Rationale:

There is, at present, no appropriate newsgroup to report to, and
discuss matters with, those butterfly and moth enthusiasts who are
interested mainly in what is happening on the UK scene.

The existing newsgroup "sci.bio.entomology.lepidoptera" is generally
felt by UK enthusiasts to be unsatisfactory for this purpose, covering

as it does the entire worldwide scene (but with a particular bias
     towards US matters).

Charter:
Topics for discussion include conservation issues, interesting
or unusual sightings, species distribution changes, reports and
enquiries on the status of existing colonies as well as more specific
subjects such as, for instance, the arguments for and against the
reintroduction of species which have become locally extinct.

 Advertising:
Advertising is forbidden, with the following exceptions:

Suppliers of uk.rec.lepidoptera relevant goods and services may post a
pointer to their website or invitation to request details. This
may not exceed four lines and may be posted no more often than
once every three months. The subject line should begin "AD" or
     "ADVERT".

Participants in discussions may include references to their
     uk.rec.lepidoptera-related business in their .sig

 Binaries:
With the exception of PGP signatures, all encoded binaries
(eg pictures, HTML, word processor files, .zip files, "business
cards", html) or similar non-plaintext postings are forbidden:
Such material belongs on a web or ftp site, to which a pointer
     may be posted.

Moderated:
    The group is unmoderated

Proponent:
    Graham Durbin g at durb.freeserve.co.uk

Further Information:
It is intended that the newsgroup will perform a function similar to
the existing newsgroup "uk.rec.birdwatching" (except, of course,
that it will deal with butterfly and moth-related matters)

Regarding the proposed name of the newsgroup, I have no strong
views, and I'm quite happy to go along with the consensus, or
whichever name conforms most closely with existing guidelines

PROCEDURE:
This RFD will be discussed in uk.net.news.config for a minimum
of 10 days (until 04 December 1998.) This RFD is valid until 03
January 1999. If there is a large degree of support for the group
It will be fast-tracked otherwise a vote will be asked for.
