That may be a specimen called the Black Witch.  It is a tropical migrant that
frequently flies up from Mexico, and is in the Noctuidae family.  This has been
a very good year for migrant species and the Black Witch is not uncommon in
southern California and Arizona.  Check Covell's Peterson Guide book on eastern
moths, I think he will have a picture of it.  The only other large moths from
the Bay Area would have flown several months ago.
