As someone already mentioned, this phenomena  of noctuids migrating uphill
to aestivate and feed grizzly bears has been in the press the last year or
two. 

If I recall  correctly, the main species is Euxoa auxiliaris, with several
other Euxoa sp. also involved.

As to how they get in - it would not take a very big space.  The similarly
sized Spaelotis clandestina up here like to appear inside, and watching one
excape from a closed fist shows how small a gap is needed !!!
