identifying beetles

I'm no beetle expert....but they sound like "Carrion Beetles".  I don't
have a clue as to their latin names (or I would have posted them to
avoid the rumblings of taxonomical discontent).  They feed on dead 
animals and I usually find them in groups in or around some rotting
carcass somewhere (not that I encounter all that many rotting
carcasses).  Any "decent" insect book will have pictures and
descriptions.
