Sounds like Dryocampa rubicunda, the Rosy Maple Moth. It is a
Saturniid and is related to the Regal and Imperial moths. Primary
larval foodplant is- you guessed it- maples!, in particular Silver
Maple (Acer saccharinum). They also feed on oaks. They're common here
in the northeastern US but I'm surprised you found one so far north.
Could be a new record for your area.
