The numbers of butterflies in the South American rainforest probably range in
the tens of thousands of species and subspecies. sadly many of these may not
even be discovered due to the reckless destruction of these rainforests. A very
beautiful group of butterflies are the brillant blue Morphos and the Owl Faced
Butterflies (Caligo). Also are the Metalmarks (Riodindae) and Heliconid
Butterflies, sometimes refered to as 'bowties'.
