Hiya,
In Hawaii they call it "Black Witch" (apparently in CA, too!) It is said to
be the unsettled spirit of a dead person and bad luck.
But in the Bahamas (Andros Island) they call it a "Money Bat," if you find
one in your house, money will come. It doesn't actually bring the money
itself, but it's good luck!
Same moth as far as I can tell! I like the second story better!

occurs sporatically in California through the south up to Bakersfield, where
I live, and where I have caught two over the past ten years. MONA number
is 8649, synonyms for Genus are Idechthis, Otosema and Erebus, synonyms for
species are odora and agarista

and have been trying to find its identity, but to no avail yet. It has a
wing span of 4-5 inches approx. It is a dark brown with some purplish
irredescent markings . The size of it is what is most remarkable. Anybody
out there know what type it is and is it typical to the San Diego,
California area??? Thanks. The Gowen family
