"wooly worms"

Can anyone tell me anything about what we call "wooly worms"? They are
everywhere this time of year in the midwest and we are curious as to
why they seem to swarm at this time of year(fall). I assume that they
are lepidoptera and that they will turn into some sort of butterfly or
moth.
We would appreciate any and all information that you could provide to
us.
