In Iowa, Restitching the Torn Fabric of the Prairie

Ecologists call them "prairie remnants."

They are forgotten snippets of land along roadsides. Corners of farm fields
steep enough or wet enough to have escaped the plow. The rough of an
occasional midwestern golf course. These are the few remaining pockets of the
American prairie, once a vast sea of grasses, sedges, and flowering plants
that spanned three time zones.
