Double mounting with polyporous fungus blocks

Grey Birch used to be an abundant tree in the Northeast. The population
was decimated by a leaf miner which left many dead birch trunks on which
Polyporus betulinus grew in great profusion. However, I haven't seen
one of these in many years and suspect that they may have become a
rarity. Unlike many of the larger bracket fungi this one had a spongy
texture.
