Mary,
we (in Italy) use "Butterflies of Britain & Europe", by Tom Tolman and
Richard Lewington, Collins Field Guide, 1997 (not too huge but with hard
cover!), which is the best also for Italy. Anyway, for any info about local
distribution of butterflies, don't hesitate to contact me directly.
