INTERACTIONS BETWEEN PLANTS AND ATTACKING ORGANISMS:
MECHANISMS, GENETICS, ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION

SCOPE
Plants are sessile organisms that cannot run away from their enemies.
Instead, plants have evolved a wide array of traits that enable them to
survive the attacks by their potential enemies. These enemies, such as
insects, nematodes, fungi, bacteria and viruses, have evolved traits
that allow them to recognize specific characteristics of plants to
distinguish between host and non-host plants, and/or to overcome the
defences of certain plants. Sometimes the interactions between plants
and attackers are short (incompatible interactions), e.g. resulting in
programmed cell death. In other cases long-lasting (compatible)
interactions between the plant and the attacking organisms result, where

the attacking organism establishes, colonizes and reproduces. Such
interactions may occur both above and below the soil surface.
In this Autumn School  basic features of the interactions between plants

and attacking organisms will be highlighted going from the molecular to
the population level. The three main topics are:
(1) Mechanisms. Attacking organisms such as nematodes and insects have
various mechanisms of detecting plants and evaluating their chemical
composition.  These comprise, for instance, the chemosensory perception
of so-called secondary plant chemicals. In addition, the attacking
organism may manipulate the quality of the host plant to fit its own
needs, and may suppress possible defence reactions of the plant. In
their turn, plants may perceive the presence of their enemies and can
initiate a suite of induced defences. Mechanistic aspects related to
interactions between plants and viruses, bacteria, nematodes and insects

will be covered on the first day.
(2) Genetics. The interactions between plants and their enemies are not
fixed over time. Plants as well as the attacking organisms consist of
populations of different genotypes. Interactions between plants and
attacking organisms are often genotype specific. Furthermore, natural
selection acts on the different genotypes, which may result in changes
in the genetic composition of both the plant population and the
population of the attacking organism. The rate of change may depend on
the intensity of the natural selection that the partners exert on each
other. Such genetic aspects will be covered during the second day.
(3) Ecology and Evolution. Plants are under attack of a wide range of
organisms and their interaction with one enemy may affect the
interaction with another. For instance, the benefit of a defence against

one organism may be offset by a fitness cost in the interaction with
another attacking organism. Furthermore, plant characteristics can
affect evolutionary changes in the attacking organism. As a consequence
the ecological context can have important consequences for evolutionary
changes in the population of both the plant and each of the attacking
organisms. Such interactions will be the topic of the third day.

STRUCTURE AND LOCATION
The school is an initiative of the Graduate School of Experimental Plant

Sciences in co-operation with the C.T. de Wit Graduate  School for
Production Ecology and Resource Conservation. It will be held at the
Crop Protection Centre of Wageningen University and lasts for three
days, one day for each of the three major themes: 1) mechanisms, 2)
genetics and 3) ecology and evolution. Each morning, four lectures (45
min. including discussion) will be given by invited keynote speakers.
Each participant will be invited to present his/her work by means of a
poster, which will be exposed throughout the course. In the afternoons a

selection of participants will be offered the opportunity to present
their research in more detail in a 15 min. presentation. For each theme
this will be done in subgroups consisting of ca 10-12 participants. An
important aim of these afternoon sessions is to have ample time for
discussion among the participants. Invited keynote speakers will act as
moderators. They will be asked to prepare provocative statements as a
potential contribution to the discussion.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The topic is relevant for all students in Biology, Agricultural
Sciences, Soil Ecology and Microbiology, and Crop Protection, and should

draw interest from students in molecular biology, physiology, genetics,
ecology, evolutionary biology and related disciplines. Attendance is
limited to 80 persons.

The registration fee is Dfl. 400.=. For students that participate in the

graduate schools “Experimental Plant Sciences” and “Production Ecology
and Resource Conservation the registration fee is Dfl. 100.=. This
includes drinks, lunches and a book of abstracts. The registration form
