Hi all

Vanessas on their journey to the north have now at least reached 63.5 north
latitude in Norway.
On my first trip for the season to one of my favourite hilltops outside
Trondheim to day, 1. June, I observed one male Vanessa atalanta and one
male Vanessa cardui, both having established their territories in the
afternoon, 04.30 p.m. Both individuals were in good condition, just a
little faded.

I suggest that both species have been here for a time already: Except from
to day the last days have been cold, and winds from west have been
dominating not allowing any migrants to arrive. During a long period from
late April to 18. May south and southeasterly winds were dominating, and on
17. May the Weather Service at Trondheim airport recorded + 27 degrees, the
highest temperature so far this season. The first vanessas most probably
have arrived during first half of May.
