Bruce,

You argue in favor of gene-swapping by referring to the swapping that has
gone on without human intervention in the past as a precedent that justifies
humans doing  the swapping intentionally.  So if little Johnny chops off his
arm, you are going to do the same?!

But seriously folks, if this is continually happening:

What is it that distinguishes species from each other?

What preserves the distinction?

Is it important to maintain firewalls on genomes or should we create as many
viruses as possible just because we know how to do so?

Actual, our mtDNA is from bacteria, so that humans (and indeed almost all
eukarotes) are made up of genes from two different kingdoms!
