Jim -
Both of use the 8X42 Elites. Ours focus on our toes. The difference in
magnification is negligible and the 8X42s have an appreciably wider
field of view. They are waterproof and unlike some of the cheaper close
focus binoculars they are excellent for birding, mammal watching, etc.
