advice for a newbie

I recently posted about woolly bears for a writer friend of mine, and
it got me to thinking about my childhood days, when I raised Io moths
(they even had names) from the caterpillars that ate the golden rain
tree next to my house.

Other than identifying to determine what a caterpillar eats, and giving
them enough room to spread their wings when they do emerge, what should
I keep in mind if I should ever find a suitable caterpillar?
