1. - Early (Namurian A to C) amphibious insects with primarily
brachypterous wings adapted for respiration and thermoregulation -
Cacurgoids and other nygmate homoneurous "protorthoptera".
2. - Early (Namurian B) terrestrial insects with primarily brachypterous
wings adapted as dorsal shields for protection of an enlarged abdomen -
Hrdinoids and other anygmate "protorthoptera".

These answers are opinions based on informed, studied interpretation of
observations made and documented on fossil specimens and observations made
and documented on the functional morphology of similar living insects.
They are part of a description of the "great experiment" of evolution.
This particular description can be falsified only by observations that
favor a more robust explanation that better fits the observed data.
