I think that Mark has clarified the issue and presented it in a 
reasonable light.  The work of amateurs (whether collectors, bird 
banders, monarch-taggers, or observers) will add to knowledge. That 
knowledge might be a dangerous thing if it identifies or validates 
environmental problems that warrant attention.  

He added the interesting observation that the anti-environmentalists may 
see the value more clearly (there ox might be gored) than 
environmentalists (anti-oxid-dents).
