The promise of Monarchs and a curious five-year old

We let some milkweed grow behind our house because we were concerned
about disappearing habitat for Monarchs in our area, plus I was too
lazy to cut it down. My five-year old son started picking the
caterpillars off today and I told him to leave them alone since we
wanted them to become butterflies and we didn't have anything suitable
to keep them in. Now we are wondering if there is a way to provide a
convenient branch for them to affix to and be able to observe their
transformation into adults. There was a butterfly exhibit we saw
recently where there were many chrysalides in a box. We were curious
how that was done and if it would be possible to do this ourselves
with some of the caterpillars on our milkweed. Anybody have any
ideas? Any information would be appreciated.
