Lignumvitae Key is now a state botanical site (Lignumvitae Key State
Botanical Site) and is located 1/2 mile north of the North end of Lower
Matecumbe Key in the Florida Bay. It acts as a natural barrier between Indian
Key Channel to the East and Lignumvitae Channel to the West. It is accessible
via a ferry/boat operated by the Florida Parks system. It is virtually
undisturbed and somewhat isolated.

I only visited Lignumvitae Key once in the early 1980s. There was nothing on
Lignumvitae Key that could not be found on Lower or upper Matecumbe then.
That is not the case now. Development has altered the Key significantly. I am
sure that Marpesia petreus, Eunica tatila, and Eunica monima are still island
residences.

A research permit is required to collect anything on any state own lands in
Florida, including Lignumvitae Key.

Visit Lignumvitae Key in October/November when it is lush and green and many
native plant flower.
