Which came first - tree or weed?

In the spring the Monarch heads north in search of disturbed/open areas
where the Milkweeds grow.   In the fall they head south searching for a
stand of old growth trees in which to pass the winter.

This thread is a backdrop for the question.  In the Monarch's cycle which
came first in its _evolution_ the old growth association or the
new/disturbed association?   Or, does this point to _creation_ - all
aspects at once (the irreducibly complex machine).  By which ever way, the
migratory phase Monarch is an organism utilizing (needing?) two very
different habitats in its annual cycle.
