Polish letters

This has to do with a real nomenclature issue. Question: If an 1802 book
published in Polish had a word with the letter 'y' in it; would anyone who
reads it confuse that letter with the letter 'j'. Or stated another way; in
1802 did the Polish language employ both the letter y and the letter j in a
script that ensured no chance of confusion to readers who do not know the
Polish language ??? Thanks for your help. Of course the mystery will be
revealed in due course ---
