According to Borror (in _Dictionary of Word Roots and Combining Forms_), the
diphthong "ae" is pronounced as a long e - like in "Pete".  By the way, I
find this book indispensable.  Knowing the meaning of the roots helps me to
remember the species as well as the scientific name.
