I seem to remember that the first Fourth of July Count was conducted by Bob 
Pyle along the Highline Canal in Denver. The idea was to find out how the 
local butterflies were doing. The idea of Fourth of July Butterfly Counts 
was then taken up by the Xerces Society. Why they let it go I do not know!
