NYTimes.com Article: When Biological Control Gets Out of Control

All -

In 1966 or 1967 I can remember playing Little League baseball, and
between innings watching the biplane spraying the forests of East Haddam, CT
with insecticide to "kill the Gypsy Moth caterpillars". It passed right
over us on more than one occasion, and we could feel the droplets hitting
our faces.

At the time, I was starting to collect butterflies and moths (typical
kid stuff - dermestids got everything before very long, and I eventually
took up other hobbies) and my "Holy Grail" was a Luna Moth. After the mist
had settled, the Gypsys came back the next year, but it was twenty years
until I saw a Luna in Connecticut. The Promethias, Cecropias, and
Polyphemus moths came back first, but not until the early 80's. Scientific
observation - no. Common sense, however, points to the obvious conclusion.
