radiation and speciation

Back in the late 1950's there was an interview with Edward Teller. He 
was asked about the long term consequences of radiation and responded 
that it wouldn't be a problem and might be beneficial because after all 
"....evolution relies on mutation"

I remember we considered this a rather sardonic joke in my college dorm 
when his remark was publicized. But Teller was certainly serious.
