Alliances

In the middle of the last century, when conservation focused extensively
on preventing soil erosion, building farm ponds, and hedge rows, some of
the most active voices for conservation came from hunters. As people
with other interests jointed the conservation movement, the alliance
with hunters (or others with extractive resource use) was often uneasy,
yet Ducks Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, and other groups have been
important voices for habitat preservation. Perhaps Butterflies
Unlimited will gain the same reputation. MIKE GOCHFELD
