Having lived in Florida, I grew my fair share of Aristolochia. Digging root was always easy, a lot of root with a small amount of vine. I put them in pots with good soil, once the vine began to grow, I put it in the ground and they would take off. However, once the Battus polydamus found them, prunning was never necessary.
I also grew them from seeds as well. Planting seeds always produced young plants. I grew A. elegans, A. giagantia. A. peruvensis, A. triloba, and a number of exotics that I would pick up at plants sales at Fairchild Gardens in Coral Gables and Mounds Botanical Gardens in Palm Beach.
