another response to Mike Quinn:

It is astonishing to me to see the lack of tolerance and cooperation
among those interested in fundamentally the same thing.

Jeff Glassberg foresaw and, through NABA, helped build the surge of
interest in butterflies that has been taking place in the last
decade. Most of that is general appreciation, which is commendable.
As an individual's interest in butterflies deepens (e.g., towards
moths, ecology, systematics), however, that person should also
consider the Lepidopterists's Society.

The purpose of the Lep Soc is "to promote internationally the science
of lepidopterology in all its branches; to further the scientifically
sound and progressive study of Lepidoptera; to publish periodicals
and other publications on Lepidoptera; to facilitate the exchange of
specimens and ideas by both the professional worker and the amateur
in the field; to compile and distribute information to other
organizations and individuals for purposes of education and
conservation and appreciation of Lepidoptera; and to secure
cooperation in all measures tending to that end." (Lep Soc
constitution)

The Lep Soc is an international umbrella organization that supports
the full range of interest in butterflies and moths. It is run by
its membership. If you don't already know about it,
http://www.furman.edu/~snyder/snyder/lep/
or http://www.lepsoc.org/ will get you more.
