It was long before video cameras, or widely-availible still cameras, but
(as reported in Scudder's 'Butterflies of New England' (1889)) there was
a mass flight of _Eurema lisa_ which arrived (from the NW) at Bermuda,
and was seen by "several persons living on the northern side of the
main island"--"and fishermen out that morning stated that their boats
were literally covered with these butterflies". Anecdotal evidence, to
be sure, but rather convincing unless you subscribe to a mass hallucination.
This flight involved at least 750 miles over water, and occurred in
October, when there were less than 12 hours of daylight. Also, the flight
arrived early in the morning. The butterflies were clearly aloft, whether
flying or just windborne, during the night.
