Just a data point: when there was a big migration of Pontia daplidice
into Finland in early 70's, I got the first one from fluttering around
the light trap late in evening. Next they fields were full of
P. daplidice.
Flying in night may not have been "voluntary" for the butterflies, but
least they were moving along with the air currents during the night
time.
