Chuck,

Species and subspecies are named and described by collectors. Having achieved such
status, these organisms may then fall under the protection of the US Federal
Endangered Species Act of 1973, but only if someone petitions the Secretary of the
Interior. The petitioner is often a collector. When collectors such as Ron
Gatrelle or Thomas Emmel describe new subspecies, Interior Secretaries such as
Gayle Norton start getting interested. Are these enough names today, or should we
start checking throught the phone book for unAmerican people with binoculars?

Proud to have a name,
Proud to be an American,
Proud to have a net and binoculars,
Patrick Foley
