Common names list--need for unique names

Barb speaketh the truth. This is the underlying principle of those who
seek to standardize common names. This includes standardizing names
across continents which is why we have to call it the Gray Catbird
instead of just Catbird, lest it be confused with those Green Catbirds
down Australia-way.

But principles are important so that future generations don't wonder
what we could have been thinking in the dark ages of nomenclature. Of
course, calling something the Northern Southern Hairstreak doesn't do it
for me. Bird people long ago adjured using common names for
subspecies.

Fortunately Ron (who recently told us that he is a newcomer to common
names) chose wisely in not giving P brevicauda and P indra the same
common names. Gratifyingly the names Short-tailed and Indra
respectively happen (by coincidence) to be the names used in the NABA
Checklist of Common Names. Two down, only about 700 to go.
