Subject: A Cameron Co. Report for 24:xi:2002

Species diversity and numbers up significantly in the eastern rgv.
Afternoon
highs reached into the lo 80s with sunny conditions all day. Todays
highlights:

Aguna asander - Gold Spotted Aguna (1) - Brownsville. Nectaring on E.
odoratum @1450hrs.

Xamia xami - Xami Hairstreak (30+) - Brownsville. All courting/feeding on
the wind protected sides of the loma ridges.

Lasaia sula - Blue Metalmark (100-200++) - Brownsville. All nectaring on E.
odoratum.

Melanis pixe - Red Bordered Pixie (20+) - Brownsville. All nectaring on E.
odoratum.

Day flying moths:

Phaelosia saucia - Saucy Beauty (8) - Brownsville. All nectaring on E.
odoratum. Often locally common.

Androloma disparata - Disparate Forester (3) - Brownsville. All nectaring
on
E. odoratum.

Field notes: Never in the modern annals of Texas Lepidoptera have so many
Blue Metalmarks been reported from a single location. What a day. Every
stand of odoratum was covered with shiny blue bugs. Queens and Soldiers
still very thick from Rio Grande City to Browntown. Things didnt really
start moving until around mid day and activity was still peaking well into
the late afternoon.

Saludos,

Charlie
