If someone uses a fundamental logical fallacy in a scientific debate they
are
doing one of two things.

1) Demonstrating incompetence in understanding the basics of science.

Many misleading assumptions my be provoked from the argument "absence of
evidence" it depends on who is holding the brush. You must remember that
there is an absence of evidence! It is not a lack of the ability to
comprehend the basics. It is the human inability of every "unknown" to be
evidenced. This works conversely also.
If it were brought to jury who would rightly convict?

-Statistics have been brought forth some time ago that work out
probabilities to the affect of extreme (unrealistic) numbers of reared
butterflies needing to be introduced to effect _any_ given population. This
is projected risk is sound. Risk assessment is a functional science. There
have been no unemotional statistics to disprove the statistics afforded.
In logical terms is it wisdom to heed statistical articles?

2) Attempting to mislead.

Converse is also true- see paint brush remark!

"Either way the argument is invalid."
