southmost Texas last week...

On Jan. 4, 2003, Ben Basham and I visited two areas in Weslaco, Hidalgo
Co,., Texas; Valley Nature Center and Rainbow Gardens from 1:30 to 4:30pm.
We recorded the following species:

1. Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes): 1
2. Southern Dogface (Zerene cesonia): 5
3. Cloudless Sulphur (Phoebis sennae): fairly common
4. Large Orange Sulphur (P. agarithe): 4
5. Lyside Sulphur (Kricogonia lyside): 5
6. Tailed Orange (Pyrisitia proterpia): 1 
7. Little Yellow (P. lisa): fairly common
8. Sleepy Orange (Abaeis nicippe): 3 
9. Dainty Sulphur (Nathalis iole): 2
10. Gray Hairstreak (Strymon melinus): 3
11. Red-crescent Scrub-Hairstreak (S. rufofusca): 1
12. Dusky-blue Groundstreak (Calycopis isobeon): 1
13. Mallow Scrub-Hairstreak (Strymon istrapa): 6
14. Fatal Metalmark (Calephelis nemesis): 5
15. Red-bordered Pixie (Caria ino): 3
16. American Snout (Libytheana carinenta): fairly common 
17. Monarch (Danaus plexippus): 1
18. Queen (D. gilippus): fairly common
19. Soldier (D. eresimus): 1
20. Mexican Silverspot (Dione moneta): 1
21. Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae): 2
22. Julia Heliconian (Dryas iulia): 
23. Vesta Crescent (Phyciodes vesta): 6
24. Phaon Crescent (P. phaon): 5
25. Texan Crescent (Anthanassa texana): 2 
26. Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui): 1
27. Red Admiral (V. atalanta): 3
28. White Peacock (Arantia jatrophe): common
29. Mexican Bluewing (Myscelia jatrophae): 5
30. Common Mestra (Mestra amymone): 1 
31. Leafwing (?) probably Tropical (Anaea sp.): 1
32. Carolina Satyr (Hermeuptychia sosybius): 2
33. Tailed Aguna (Aguna metophis): 1 (photos) 
34. Long-tailed Skipper (Urbanus proteus): 4
35. Dorantes Longtail (U. dorantes): 1
36. Teleus Longtail (U. teleus): 1 
37. Brown Longtail (U. procne): fairly common
38. Sickle-winged Skipper (Eabtis tamenund): common
39. Tropical Checkered-Skipper (Pyrgus oileus): fairly common
40. Laviana White-Skipper (Haliopetes lavana): fairly common
41. Julia's Skipper (Nastra julia): 1 (Ben only) 
42. Fawn-spotted Skipper (Cymaenes odilia): 2
43. Clouded Skipper (Lerema accius): fairly common

45. Southern Broken-Dash (Wallengrenia otho): 1
