No fire or smoke. The 1990 shot was taken in the afternoon
with the sun low in the sky so the trunks of the trees show up
better.

In any case, I can't see any change in forest cover / forest density
between the 1990 and 2005 photos. So I am wondering why 11
monarch scientists

are telling the public and reporters:
"until recent years the forest has been relatively dense"
"ongoing culling of the trees in the area has opened the forest
and created microclimate conditions that the butterflies do not
tolerate."
