There's currently a large Black Witch moth (Ascalapha odorata) movement
along the Texas coast as these emails testify... Last summer's coastal push
was two weeks earlier... Haven't heard from west Texas yet... They fell out
of the sky there late last June...

Amazingly, I've already received the first Canada record for 2005, from near
Calgary!!!

Hi,
We read a note on the TPWD site that said to contact you with sightings of
the Black Witch Moth.
We found one this morning, July 1, 2005 in our hose reel. We live about 5
miles south of Tomball, TX near SH 249. We took a couple of photos and can
send a copy once we have them developed, if you are interested.

Regards,
Doug and LaDonna Clifton

We are seeing fairly large numbers of these moths in Galveston County. I
had one in the back yard in Dickinson, Tx this afternoon about dusk. Wing
span was about 7 inches. I believe it was a male. There have been several
seen at Galveston Island State Park in the last two or three days. They
have been in the women's shower/bath houses in the beach front camp grounds
and one was in a storage are at the headquarters.

Mike,

I had a male Black Witch Moth on my porch this evening. He had a small piece
missing from his left wing tip.
I am located near downtown Rockport. I reported 2 of them last year. This is
my first one this year.

Debra Corpora

Mike: Petra went on a Pelagic Trip out of Port Isabel Friday and wanted
you to know of some finds they made out there..

Out on the edge of the continental shelf on a course of 65 deg.s out of
Port Isabel they had one BW flying low over the water.

On Saturday morning she and Scarlet Colley saw another BW flying along
the edge of the west shore of South Bay along the edge of the Mangroves.
