Mike, reports of large numbers of monarchs during the past
10 days have come from as far west as North Dakota and
Manitoba to as far east as Ontario and Ottawa. For example,
the following report about sightings is from Algonquin
Provincial Park, about 150 miles north of Toronto:

Subject: Monarchs - Algonquin East Side Butterfly Count

Hi Don,

I thought you might be interested in knowing about the
Monarch total during the Algonquin Park East Side
Butterfly Count yesterday.

Despite less than perfect conditions (overcast for
most of the day) we still managed to tally 34
Monarchs, which is more than quadruple our previous
high of 8 in 1999 (our previous count average was less
than 2).

I also noticed during my drive up to and back from the
Park over the past few days that they are around in
significant numbers between my homehere in Lakefield
and Algonquin Park. My impression is that it's shaping
up to be a good year for them here in Ontario!

Cheers,
Colin
