Nice story indeed!!!

A few years ago I met the true kid (David Marenger) who went to the south to
catch this blue butterfly with George Brossard

He is still alive and now 25 (perhaps even older) and he lives about 1 hour
west from me.

The true entomological story is slightly different from the romanced version

David told me that they went to catch a blue morpho (any kind possible), but
they were off season and we’re low in abundance.

So, after a while, he ended up catching an Archeoprepona specie with nice
blue patches. This butterfly filled up his dream of catching a blue
butterfly and he came back filled with hope, and was truly healed from his
brain tumour from which doctors thought he only had weeks to survive. They
were awed and are still puzzled of this incredible recovery from this
terminal disease Of course, the Morphos used in the movie are a perfect
image of a blue butterfly, but you see, a single Archeoprepona saved his
life!

He is still very active and he loves to tell his story. I made 35 Morpho
menelaus frames this last winter for a local kid who has leukemia and he
gave all these frames to his friends from the Ste-Justine’s children’s
hospital in Montreal Quebec who are in treatment for cancers, leukemia and
other diseases. I called up David and he went down there on December 25th
to give a pep talk to the kids for Christmas, ant then they gave my blue
butterfly frames to all.

I wasn’t there, but you can imagine that the room must have been filled with
very strong emotions.

Let’s hope that the blue butterflies of the world give hope to people in
distress.

Cheers,

Dave

All,

As anticipated, a dramatic experience by the kid and the entomologist and an
inspiring ending. After reading the credits, it is based on an account by
Georges Broussard, from Montreal, I think. Good film. Four stars, thumbs up,
etc.

Hi all,

Maybe a few have seen this film already. There is a new movie out called
"The Blue Butterfly". Based on a true story, it stars William Hurt as a
grumpy entomologist who grants a boy who's dying of a brain tumor his
ultimate wish... to go to the rain forest to catch a blue morpho. Although
it has some of the entomological mistakes we've all come to accept in films,
it's fairly well done, better than most insect movies I've seen. Haven't
watched the whole thing yet so nobody give away the end!

Best, Rich
