Pygmy Blue

Hi Torben,

I'm going by Opler & Warren's Butterflies of North America. 2.
Scientific Names List for Butterfly Species of North America, north of
Mexico (2003). They make reference to several studies listing them as
separate species, but also mention possible intermediates in Texas
[Bordelon & Knudson (2000)] and Pavulaan & Gatrelle's (1999) suggestion
that they are conspecifs....lastly concluding that "further study is
badly needed"

So, I agree with you that they may not be truly distinct.

Again, we would like to have the most accurate representation of pygmy
blues in the Tampa area.

Dear Don,

I am not very sure whether B. pseudofea is truly distinct from B.
exilis.
But LEPS members might be interested in knowing that B. exilis has
managed fully to establish itself in eastern Arabia. The curious story
of this event is fully described in the following paper:

PITTAWAY, A.R., LARSEN, T.B., LEGRAIN, A., MAJER, J., WEIDENHOFFER, Z.
& GILLET, M. 2006. The establishment of an American butterfly in the
Arabian
Gulf: Brephidium exilis (Boisduval, 1852) (Lycaenidae). Nota
lepidopterologica, 29:3-14.

All the best,

Torben B Larsen

Hello All,

Sorry for any cross-posting but....

One of our education centers is constructing a moving model of Eastern
Pygmy Blue (Blephidium pseudofea) and while I can provide a ventral
photo, a dorsal photo is hard to come by...we have tracked down a dorsal
shot of western (B. exilis). How different are they ? There are
probably sexual dimorphisms.. We would like to get the most accurate
image/description for the artist/model maker to work from. If anyone
can help out, please contact me off-list.

Thanks,

Don
