I am sending this message on behalf of Marc Epstein:

Sorry to bring you sad news that Tom Eichlin passed away in Arizona
yesterday. Tom was at the Plant Pest Diagnostic Laboratory, California
Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) from the 1970s until 2004. He was
a recognized authority on the clear-winged moths of the family Sesiidae and
noctuid moths. He also served the Lepidopterists’ Society with distinction
as editor of the JLS.

Tom moved with his wife Kathy to Arizona a few years after retiring as an
annuitant employee. In recent years he had been suffering from
diverticulitis and kidney failure. Kathy died earlier this year.

I talked to Tom a little over a week ago and he seemed in good spirits
although disappointed in being taken off the kidney transplant list for
having other medical difficulties.

Tom Eichlin’s warm sense of humor and easy going personality will be sorely
missed along with his contributions to science. Sadly, his final work on
the Sesiidae of Mexico will be completed posthumously.

My understanding at this time is that there will be no memorial service,
but I will send further information if it becomes available.

Marc E. Epstein
