MCDOUGAL CENTER EVENTS THIS WEEK

  * MCDOUGAL SALSA DANCING / (10-29-2007 7:00 - 8:30 PM)/
Do you hide in a corner when the club starts playing Latin music? 
Are you looking for a fun way to exercise?  Join the McDougal Salsa
Series!  We will meet in HGS 119 for the next three Mondays from
7-8:30 with the founder of Rumberos Dance studio to learn to dance
Salsa.  No partners necessary.  $15 dollars gets you three lessons. 
A few spots are left so sign up at HGS 123 today or try your luck by
signing up at the door (though a class limit will be imposed).

  * TRAGICALLY HIP @ TOADS' PLACE / (10-29-2007 8:00 PM)/
The Tragically Hip will be playing at Toads on Monday, October 29th
at 9 PM.  Don't miss your chance to see this legendary Canadian rock
band in a small venue setting.  The McDougal Center has purchased a
limited number of tickets for a show that will sell out soon, so buy
your ticket now for $22.50 at the McDougal Box Office, 123 HGS,
10am-5pm, cash or check only.

This week features more fabulous harp music by Joy Yeh, Ukelele
playing by John Sipher, Classical Guitar by Thomas Flippen, and the
return of singer/songwriter Miqdad Mohammed.  7:30 in the McDougal
Common Room.  Blue Dog will be open for refreshments.

Register to vote in November local elections. Contact Registrar of

  * DEADLINE FOR GRAD STUDENT GROUPS TO REGISTER WITH MCDOUGAL
STUDENT LIFE / (10-31-2007  )/
Grad/prof student organizations should to register each year by Oct.
31 with the Office of Grad Student Life @ McDougal Center. 
Registration gives access to McDougal rooms, advice and requests for
limited funding, as well as access to university rooms through the

  * GRAD NIGHT @ THE BEINECKE: ITALIAN FESTIVAL BOOKS / (11-01-2007
5:30 - 7:30 PM)/
Come celebrate the artistic richness of Italian Festival Books with a
talk by Dr. Angela Capodivacca followed by a light reception and a
trip to the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library to view the
current exhibition.  The talk and reception will begin at 5:30 pm
behind the screen in the McDougal Center Common Room, HGS. At 6:30 pm
we will walk to the Beinecke to view the exhibit.  Free but RSVP if
possible to mcdougal.center at yale.edu with "Beinecke" in subject line.

  * F3:  FIRST FRIDAY AT FIVE / (11-02-2007 5:00 - 7:00 PM)/
Join us for November?s F3, the Graduate Student's monthly Happy Hour,
held at HGS. Free soft drinks, local microbrew from New England
Brewing, wine, and themed happy hour snacks! Held every month on the
first Friday. Meet other grad/prof students from around campus; grad
students, spouses & partners & families welcome. 21 and over to
drink.

It's time to set your clocks BACK 1 hour on Sat night before going to
bed. Enjoy the extra hour of sleep!

MCDOUGAL FELLOWS' TIPS OF THE WEEK

  * TOM'S ARTS AND CULTURE TIP OF THE WEEK
There are all sorts of good music events happening this week.  First
up, there is Lunchtime Chamber Music, where you can have a classy and
relaxing lunch break.  This Wednesday at 12:30, School of Music
students perform chamber music at the British Art Gallery. FREE. 
Then there is Opera Scenes, where School of Music Opera students
(including present and future Metropolitan Opera singers) perform
Opera scenes in Sprague Hall. $5 for students. Friday November 2nd
and Saturday November 3rd at 8PM.

  * COURTNEY'S ARTS AND CULTURE TIP OF THE WEEK
>From November 1 - December 31 the Sterling Memorial Library's Gilmore
Music Library will be the site of an exhibit entitled "Singing the
Lord's Song in a Foreign Land: Early Sacred Music in America."  Like
all the exhibits at SML, it is free and open and to the public.

  * JAMIE'S ARTS AND CULTURE TIP OF THE WEEK
Check out the Yale Drama School's first production of the year:

  * SUSAN'S KIDS AND FAMILY TIP OF THE WEEK
On October 31st the GPSS will also be hosting a Family Fun Halloween
event. We plan to share some hot chocolate, apple cider, have a
costume parade and of course provide kids with safe and delicious
candy! We'd love for you to join us before you go trick-or-treating. 
The event is in front of the Yale Hockey Rink at 5:30!  For the family

  * PATRICIA AND GINA'S PUBLIC TIP OF THE WEEK
If you're interested in working with children who face health
difficulties and their families, the Ronald McDonald House is always
looking for volunteers or monetary donations.  They're located at 501
George Street here in New Haven and their telephone number is

  * FALL'S  TIP OF THE WEEK
The Granola Jerkies Hiking Club are hosting fall foliage
nature/photography walks this autumn in parks in CT.  They are going
to be held on Sunday Nov 4, Cockaponset State Forest (Chester/Haddam
CT) and on Sunday Nov 11, Devil?s Hopyard State Park (East Haddam,
CT).  Each of these hikes should be of moderate difficulty and will
be about 3 miles in length. Expect to be in the woods for 2-4 hours.
Be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring water and a
snack/lunch. Hikers will meet in the Science Hill parking lot at 266
Whitney Avenue (Right after the entrance) and will leave at 9:30 am
for the parks. It will take about 45 minutes to one hour to get to
these parks. Transportation cannot be guaranteed, though a few spaces
will be available, so please drive if possible. Please RSVP if

  * CREATING BIBLIOGRAPHIES WITH ENDNOTE / (10-29-2007 3:00 - 4:30
PM)/
Sessions to be held in SML Electronic Classroom, Room 609 (Bring your
Yale ID) The EndNote software program helps you to organize your
research and easily create bibliographies while writing a paper.
Using EndNote you can save references from research databases, add
notes, insert citations into a document, and format a bibliography
for that document. Register at the Sterling Library Reference Desk or
by e-mail to smlref at yale.edu.  The next session of this will be on
Tuesday, November 6, 3:00-4:30 pm.

  * FLU CLINICS AT THE RINK / (10-30-2007 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM)/
On Oct 30 & 31, and Nov 1, from 9am-1pm, there will be free flu
immunizations for adult members of the Yale community from UHS. See

11am-3pm is the Flu Clinic at 119 HGS McDougal Center!

  * CHAPEL DISTRICT'S 1ST THURSDAYS FEATURING CITYSEED / (11-01-2007
5:00 - 9:00 PM)/
Come support CitySeed and sustainability November 1st at the 1st
Thursday Monthly Event in Downtown New Haven. The 1st  Thursday of
EVERY month, the Chapel St. Historic District hosts a downtown
celebration with in-store events, promotions and entertainment,
including trunk shows, shopping discounts, refreshments, and more. 
This month participating stores will accept donations for CitySeed,
offer a free taste of fruits from CitySeed farmers, and give a free
eco-friendly designer tote with a minimum purchase (while supplies

This Thursday, the Italian department will be having their 3rd Annual
Italian Scrabble (Scarabeo) Contest in the McDougal Center Common
Room.  There will be great food and prizes, so take a study break and
come play!  Anyone with knowledge of Italian can play!

  * BIG GAY PARTY #2 @ GPSCY / (11-01-2007 9:30 PM)/
We welcome ALL of the Yale Grad and Professional Student LGBTQ
Community (plus any adventurous allies) to join us for the second Big
Gay Party of the year. Our last party was a huge success and we hope
that you will join us again this Thursday.  DJ Duchess will be
playing for us and GPSCY is offering great drink specials including
$2 well drinks and free beer until 10. It's always great time to see
old friends, make new friends from other schools, and experience the

  * SUBMIT TO OISS ?INTERNATIONAL REFLECTIONS: STORIES FROM HOME AND
ABROAD? EXHIBIT / (11-07-2007  )/
In celebration of International Education Week 2007, OISS is
sponsoring an exhibit titled "International Reflections: Stories from
Home and Abroad". The exhibit will showcase photographs and narratives
that illustrate personal histories and cross-cultural experiences of
individuals who have studied, lived, and worked abroad. The intention
is to give a glimpse of the backgrounds, identities, and journeys that
are linked to the profound transformations effected by intercultural
exchange. Entries will be displayed at 421 Temple Street throughout
the week of November 12-16 and a reception will be held on Thursday,
November 15 at 7pm. Each entry will be entered into a prize drawing
for a $100 gift certificate sponsored by STA travel. Submission

  * ?WHAT?S THE STORY WITH MUSIC?? / (11-10-2007 11:00 AM)/
On Saturday, November 10th at 11:00am in the McDougal Center Common
Room, The New Haven Brass presents "What's the Story with Music?", a
unique, educational music concert for young children.  This musical
event features an introduction and demonstration by the musicians
about theirs instruments, followed by the main piece of the
presentation, called "Where There's a Bear, There's Trouble", which
is based on the children's book of the same name.   Suitable for
children ages 4 -10.

  * GRAD STUDENTS CONTEMPLATING BECOMING PARENTS PANEL / (11-12-2007

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to start a family
while in grad school? Have your questions ready for a panel of grad
students with kids.  Come listen to the Deans tell you about the new

taking with your mouth full, get people to remember you, eloquently
enter a conversation, overcome shyness, balance your plate and drink
